Why does King go into such detail to explain the basic principles and process of the nonviolent protest movement?

King wants to use models of protest, like Mahatma Gandhi's struggle against the British in India, to illustrate Black America's resolve to obtain their goals through peaceful means. King finds non-violent resistance to be much more effective than any violent means.
