Letter From Birmingham Jail

Para. 23 Letter From Birmingham Jail/ Martin Luther King Jr.

King begins paragraph 23 with "I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers." What would have been gained or lost if he had used this paragraph as his opening?

I'm not sure how specific people would have reacted but beginning with this would lack context and take away from the intent of King's famous letter.
