How did Marthin luther king's time in the Birmingham city in jail express the highest respect for the law?

King noted that by accepting the penalty of imprisonment for his actions (breaking the law), he was in fact expressing the highest form of respect for the law.

I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
