Mr. Crawford is skeptical about hiring the boys because there are so many men looking for work, who also need to provide for their families. Stacey and Willie are young, and they have good references, as Mr. Harrison has applauded the boys' work ethic. None-the-less, he does not want to take the food out of the mouth of family man, especially since Stacey's father has a job.
