GradeSaver Lesson Plans - To Kill A Mockingbird

Day 1 - Special activities (in class):

Kind of Activity: small group activity

Objective: to consider why some people are labeled as “outsiders” by others

Time: 15-20 minutes

Structure:

Ask the question, Who are the antagonists, and why do people feel antagonistic toward them? Each small group is assigned one of the following for five minutes (simultaneously) and then reports to the class for two minutes (severally):

  • Boo Radley (seems scary; has a violent past)
  • Mrs. Dubose (mean)
  • The Ewells (poor and a “disgrace”)
  • Miss Caroline Fisher (the teacher with alternative ideas about education)
  • Blacks (to some of the white characters)

Assessment Criteria:

  • students demonstrate knowledge of the character
  • use of evidence from the text
  • speaking skills
