Although, the above quote does not appear in the text, I believe it is inferring that we as humans make mistakes.... mistakes that lead to unthought of consequences, and in turn, seem foolish. Each of the novel's characters can be seen as making mistakes..... mistakes brought on by hunger, pride, and love. I personally, do not see their mistakes as foolish.... only decisions that bring consequences unto themselves.
