Les Miserables

How is it that Jean Valjean "did not lack money" when he escaped after falling into the sea after rescuing a man hanging from ship Orion.

I get Jean Valjean hid his money in the forest at Montfermeil but in Book Third - Accomplishment of the Promise Made to the Dead Woman, Chapter XI - Number 9430 Reappears, and Cosette Wins It in the Lottery...it says "There, as he did not lack money, he procured clothing". Where did he get money when he had been in prison until he escaped by falling into the sea?

He had used his candlesticks as money and worked himself up in the world.

He became a wealthy businessman, as well as the mayor of Montreuil-sur-Mer.
