why did john run towards the execution yard instead of escaping with June and day ?

June and John planned Day's escape. Unfortunately, Day's execution date was pushed up and they weren't able to pull off the escape as planned. When they realized their plan would fail, John made himself a sacrifice and was executed in Day's place; the Republic allowed the people to believe it was in fact Day they had executed.
