Nathaniel (Natty Bumppo) has very close bonds with the Indians and is considered one of them even though he has no Indian blood. He has assimilated into their culture and considers them his brothers. As a white man, this assimilation has garnered him the Indian's trust because he has earned it. He is an integral link between two warring cultures.
