This statement refers to the act of 'scalping' and is made in direct reference to the cultural differences between the Native Americans and the whites. For the white man, this is a moral issue and one to be guided by conscience and the feeling or knowledge of right and wrong; for the Indians it isn't a hideous and unfeeling act but rather a custom, part of the Indian way of life.
