Last of the Mohicans

What are the implications of the shift away from Heyward to Uncas?

Uncas steps forward to lead the quest for the return of Cora and Alice, rather than Heyward. Why?

Heyward doesn't have the ability to track the girls, and the Uncas are expert. If Heyword didn't relinquish control of the mission, they'd have no chance to find the girls. The soldiers are out of their element, and they know it.
