Lantana Irony

Lantana Irony

Therapy

Valerie is a therapist and we see her treating multiple patients throughout the film with their issues. The irony is that Valerie and her husband John have deep issues that are unresolved and we watch as her personal feelings begin to get dragged through her sessions with patients. And that she needs as much if not more help than the people that are paying to come see her for help.

Caring for Her Husband

Sonja sees Leon enter their home after a run and he has blood all over his shirt and face. Sonja goes to him in the bathroom trying to find out what happened, if he's okay and to take care of his wounds. She is doing everything she can to care for her husband and ironically he chews her out telling her to get away from him. He doesn't want her anywhere near him because he is emotionally numb and doesn't want to reveal his wound to her.

Truth

Jane's husband comes home to an empty house. As he is leaving he sees Nick, his neighbor and asks if he's seen her with any other guy. That he'd want to know to make it easier for him. Nick tells him that he hasn't seen anyone, ironically he has. He knows that she is having an affair with a cop and he chooses not to tell Jane's husband.

Refer Him On

Valerie and John are out to dinner and she begins to tell him about one of her patients. That she is having difficulty with him. He tells her to refer him on. She attempts to tell him more about it and his response once again is to refer him on. Valerie leaves the dinner upset. Ironically she didn't want to be told what to do, she wanted her husband to listen to her and hear what she's feeling but he misses the opportunity.

Look Me in the Eyes

Valerie and John make love for what seems to be the first time in a very long time. John isn't looking at Valerie and she asks him to look her in the eyes, to connect with her. He does, but the irony is that once he does he can't continue making love to her anymore. He's lost the connection he once had with her and he cannot continue.
