Edgar's brother, Edmund, has convinced their father, the Earl of Gloucester, that Edgar is plotting to murder him in order to attain his lands and title. In response, Gloucester decrees his son an outlaw and authorizes a manhunt to capture and detain him. As a result, Edgar disguises himself as a madman by the name of Poor Tom.
