The Captain made David think he could trust him. In order to get him aboard the ship, he misled David by telling him his uncle was up to something.... his ruse succeeded.

David trusted Captain becuase ,the captain lured David to come on the convent by telling him that his uncleEbenezer was a cunning man and told him that he would be pleased to bring GIFTS for David although he was not going to QueensFerry for a long time . So David thuaght he was a goood man and trusted him as he was acting in front of David that he supported David ,that uncle Ebenezer was a bad man and wanted to kill David.
