Keep the Aspidistra Flying Background

Keep the Aspidistra Flying Background

Published in 1936, Keep the Aspidistra Flying is one of the earlier novels of the famous writer and activist, George Orwell. Gordon Comstock is the main character in the novel, and his main goal is to defy the main things that society is doing - glorifying money and status. Trying to keep himself hidden from this selfish world, several bad things subsequently happen to him, leading to the major conflicts of the story. Written before the proclaimed 1984 and Animal Farm, Keep the Aspidistra Flying is yet another of Orwell's great takes on literature and the world.

George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903 in British India. Best known for writing the dystopian novels 1984 and Animal Farm, he is one of the most famous authors from the 20th century, with the word "Orwellian" being named after him to represent a period of time or concept that seems all-powerful in manner. Born Eric Arthur Blair, Orwell changed his name as to not embarrass or let his parents know that he was writing. Orwell worked as a broadcaster for BBC for a time, but all of his voice records have mysteriously disappeared, leading to some conspiracies about him.
