Louise really doesn't have much to do. Her role is that of a wife and perhaps mother. The author illustrates the roll of women, especially of higher status, to be one dimensional. They are their husband's wife and live in his shadow. When Louise hears the news of her husband's death, she feels a chance to discover herself, she feels like she is "free". We get the sense that her "heart condition" might have been brought on by a life of idleness and boredom rather than some physical ailment.
