The ending is a happy one, I cannot say I was surprised, and yet, Chopin wrote the story so well..... that I also believed the young soldier had been killed in battle. I did not foresee that the locket might have been stolen, nor did I believe it had been lost along the way. I would have to side with Edmond's belief that it had been stolen. The first detail that led me to believe Edmond might be alive was Judge Pillier's mention of miracles...... that was the moment I realized the ending would be a happy one.
