In "A Pair of Silk Stockings", a woman's responsibility is subtly portrayed through the main character's actions throughout the day. In purchasing stockings and treating herself to other things, but later feeling a sense of dread about returning home to her family, we can see how the woman's responsibility is to sacrifice her own sense of happiness and independence for her family. Her role of wife and mother mean that she cannot enjoy simple pleasures like a new pair of stockings without feeling guilt and longing.
