The action takes place on an Island near Costa Rica where a group of scientists created a park inhabited by dinosaurs.

The story is told from a third person omniscient and objective point of view.

Tragic, violent, chaotic

The antagonist is Nedry, the character who put everyone in danger by shutting down the computers and by stealing raptors from the island. No protagonist emerges since every character fights for his own life.

The major conflict is between the humans on the island and the raptors trying to kill them.

The story reaches its climax when the characters realize that the systems put in place to protect them from the raptors are no longer working.

The presence of the lizards in the first part of the book and the violence with which they attack the humans they encounter foreshadows the problems the raptors will cause in the park.

When the first group first arrives at Jurassic Park, they are greeted by warning signs, telling the visitors that the creatures in the park are dangerous. While some characters take the signs seriously, other characters like Regis claim that the signs are there just to please the lawyers. This proves however to be an understatement as it becomes quickly clear that the creatures in the park are extremely dangerous.

One of the things alluded in the novel is the idea that humankind should not mingle with the natural course of things. The author suggests that when human tries to play God and something they should not be, the affect the natural course of the world and that the whole society has to suffer as a result.

During the first tour of the island, the group sees the different species of raptors living there. While some of the raptors are not as exciting as others, everyone is impressed to see a T-Rex, living and breathing. To lure the raptor out from its hiding place, one of the characters placed in an open space a goat and the raptor was attracted by the smell of the goat. When the raptor saw the goat, it quickly ate it in front of everyone. This image of the T-Rex devouring a smaller animal is important because it shows that while some may have been inclined to believe that the raptors posed no danger, they still were wild animals almost impossible to control.
