July's people are his white employers..... the people he assists in escaping the danger of Johannesburg. In this reversal of roles, July takes it upon himself to protect his employers and their family, as a result of the widespread murder of whites. July is the benevolent servant..... the man who saves the white "oppressors", and throughout the story, we come to see that his "people" are not always gracious in their acceptance of his help. July, none-the-less, leads his people to safety.
