Certainly Brutus had in mind a republic without an emperor or dictator. Caesar wanted all control. He wanted to be the beloved emperor to the people. Although Brutus loved Caesar, he loved Rome more and, in his view, thought Rome needed representation for the people. Brutus of course wanted power within this structure.
