First he is able to save his own life. It is well known that Antony was a loyal friend to Caesar, and he tells them that "his credit does stand on slippery ground." He then goes on to shake their hands and says he does not doubt their wisdom. He then asks their permission to speak at Caesar's funeral, as a friend. Brutus consents even though Cassius is very reluctant to permit his speech.
