The men commence in (on) their vessel having all the supplies, weapons, and fresh water they can carry. They sail ceaselessly through the water, fish, and catch what they believe to be sturgeon but is actually an extinct fossil fish. Toward the very end of the chapter, Axel begins to hallucinate.
