England in the 18th century was a time of transformation. Though class distinctions were still adhered to in full force, opportunities for education came to the forefront. Industrialization afforded new job opportunities and the ability to better oneself, even though money did not dictate social class.

Women stayed at home, ran their households, and cared for their children. Men were expected to be the breadwinners, and women of the upper class seldom married beneath them. As for women who did not belong to the upper class.... they didn't merely run their homes, they performed "all" physical labor as weel, in addition to taking care of a good number of children (eight was the average) and training those children to work for the family in whatever capacity was needed.
