Fielding's title page indicates that he was imitating Cervantes's Don Quixote. This novel like Cervantes' is also a picaresque novel–or novel of the road–and an adventure novel. The character of Parson Adams is considered by most to be the first great comic hero in the English novel. In keeping with Fielding's moralistic views, his satire extends beyond literary matters to society itself. He exposes the vices and follies not merely of individuals, but also of the upper classes, institutions, and society's values.
