Fielding uses this quote to inform the reader that this novel is in fact a biography, and that the only difference between this biography and a standard biography is the time and place of the actions; traditional biographies are very particular about their settings, but the author argues that the lawyer in the coach in Book II has existed for thousands of years all over the world and will likely continue to exist for thousands more.
