Why was Johnny mad at Mr. Hancock for turning Johnny away when he needed a job?

When Johnny asks for work from John Hancock, Hancock rejects Johnny because he cannot write. But once the great merchant realizes that he caused Johnny’s injury by ordering the sugar basin, he sends Johnny a heavy purse full of silver.
