Why does it take so long for the Lytes to acknowledge Johnny as kin

Mr. Lyte is a crook. He sees Johnny as someone to support rather than family. It isn't until Mr. Lyte gets in trouble , he plays both sides of the revolution, that he begins to see Johnny differently. Johnny tries to help Lyte's family.
