What is Johnny’s relationship with Mr. Lyte in chapters 6-8?

Mr. Lyte is more of a symbol to Johnny than a relative. He is rich and not above supporting the British if they will line his pockets. Mr. Lyte rejects Johnny early in the story: the two are not close.
