Two themes in the third and fourth chapters are coming of age and identity. In these chapters, we see Johnny suddenly without direction. The occupation he worked towards was out of his reach, and Merchant Lyte quickly dismisses the possibility that Johnny might be related. In essence, he has no direction and no identity..... these are the things is he going to have to search for.
