The people of Boston are torn between their desire for independence and their desire for peace. Although, most people find the taxes and and actions of the British to be unacceptable, not everyone wants to break away from England. Boston serves as a base for British soldiers, and a home to the spy network working against them. Danger is everywhere.

Other conflicts include Johnny's attempts to move on after his injury, his struggle with his own pride and arrogance, and his desire to be acknowledged by the Lyte family.
