Why did Mrs. Reed not let Jane Eyre sit with the rest of the family near the fire ?

Although she promised Mr. Reed that she would treat Jane as her own, Mrs. Reed favors her own spoiled children and harshly punishes Jane for her seeming impudence, even locking her up in the "red-room." Mrs. Reed punishes Jane for being an orphan and really wanted nothing to do with bringing up Jane.
