Fire 1. Almost killed Mr. Rochester but Jane woke him up in time. (Fire created by Bertha)

Fire 2. Killed Bertha and made Mr. Rochester blind.

The first one made Jane suspicious, and the 2nd one made Jane devastated about Mr. Rochester's injuries but happy that she could be independant without Bertha and Mr. Rochester's fortune and abilities to see.
