I HAD TO READ THIS FOR SUMMER READING AND IT IS THE MOST BORING THING IVE EVER HAD TO READ. ITS A GIRL WHO GETS ABUSED, GOES TO SCHOOL, SLEEPS WITH HER FRIEND BEFORE SHE DIES, BECOMES A TEACHER, MEETS A GUY, ALMOST MARRIES HIM BUT REALIZES HES MARRIED TO A MENTAL *** ALREADY. THATS BASICALLY IT

THIS BOOK SUCKS
okay, what age are you?? 10? grow up
Oh, very intellectual.
Wow...so this is actually one of the best books I've ever read and I'm reading for the third time. It has a ton of historical value relating to the time of it's creation. Also, it's a reflection of the life that the author herself had written in an era where typhoid was rampant and the abuse of the common person was all too common. Also, one shouldn't overlook the symbolic value used in symbols such as the burning veil and the lightning struck tree. On top of that the overall theme is one of destroying the belittlement of self and beating down traditional victorian marriage.
So, the next time you decide to bash a book first stop to think "How much of a jerk will I appear to be?" and then decide whether or not higher English levels or for you. :D

I read it again when I was 16; it's a masterpiece :)

At least you had an entire summer to read it. I have three weeks.
Your ignorance is amazing. You can't even tell the difference between your and you're.... Your unwillingness to open your mind to new, and sometimes difficult ideas, will keep you in the lower class.
To everyone who thinks this book is a masterpiece, congratulations you are at least 60 and you are lonely...
Who cares about symbolism. Who cares if a tree split in half symbolizes break up? Why is symbolizm good? It's not intrestong. oooo subliminal foreshadowing through symbols and stuff. That's boring.
"...subliminal foreshadowing through symbols...that's boring."
Boring?
No, that's a hallmark of good writing.
Example, the American Gothic of the first chapter, particularly the second and third page of Raymond Chandler's 'The Big Sleep'. Lots of foreshadowing via symbolism there, as well as taut, juicy writing: Medievalism, The Uncanny, The Gothic, Romanticism...

Wow you know your books dont you?
Confratulations.
Anyways I stand by my opinion. I bet hose books were awful if they had all that symbolism. So you either wasted your life studying one of the most useless subjects in the world, 60 years old (no problem with over 60 by the way),or are uptight educational person that no one likes

I think first of all it's ok to harbour
such kind of notion about a book, any book after you have read it. But it's not at all advisable to judge a book right away, because mostly the first impression doesn't tell much Just like
reading people, it's hard to read a book between the lines and even more beyond the lines. Experience helps, but it does not necessarily mean you have to be aged to take in what is meant by the author and feel sympathy.
In my case, I'm not yet 22, but I shall
say I really appreciate Jane Eyre, not
only for her great courage to pursue her love but also herself. never does she allow love blind herself and her own feelings. I believe it is essence of so-called freedom---The freedom of mind and thoughts, the most
noble and unchangable things in the whole universe.

I must say that I am not over 60, nor am I an over-educated snob. I must say that this book while slow at first read really did move me by the time I was done. I read it for the 1st time when I was 13 years old. Re-read it at 15 and then again at 21. Each time the book got better and better. One must remember that anything written at the time that this book and any book by Jane Austen was met with the same type of dislike for it was written by a woman for women readers. Austen and Bronte were two of the most brilliant female writers of their times and we as women should not only respect them for their triumphs we should alos learn how hard it was for them to overcome being the firsts.
firat of all this is my first post in this site ,i am a third year English student in Syrian Arab Republic
concerning this topic:
I don't think that the writer her self when she wrote this book was aware of all these symbols
and such things ,She was only narrating her own story in her own way.
I still love this novel and i love to read it now and then may be i can get the right point coz
I am not that much in analyzing and paraphrasing such a great novels but i hope i will be some day.

im sorry for those of you that liked this ... it was the most boring book in the world!!!!!
I'm 17 and I liked it, so it's clearly not only for old people.
What i think is sad is people who go specifically on a Jane Eyre forum to moan about the book.
You need to get a life.
