Although historical fiction is certainly popular on the contemporary scene, Scott's emphasis on themes of romanticism and medievalism is not. There are more than a few reasons for this, including: the advent of postmodernity, anti-fundamentalist characters, etc. All in all, the medieval hero is not really a popular character these days.
