Scott was trying to get away from his "expected" style of writing, in which his novels dealt almost solely with the historical Scottish Highlands.

Ivanhoe is not a "history" of a people, it's a novel, and it's supposed to be entertaining rather than education or point making. It's a romance rather than a tale of the times. It's also fantastic!
