Why does the veteran call the narrator invisible in chapter three in Invisible Man

The vet doctor calls the narrator an automaton stricken with a blindness. He has invested his identity in an institution and people that think little of him. He implies the narrator turns his back on his own identity thus making him virtually invisible.
