The vet doctor gives interesting insights into the reality which the narrator will refuse, in its totality, until the end of the novel. Moreover, the Vet speaks of his struggle against and for life, being a doctor, but is punished for saving it and realizes that his contribution was worthless. He predicts rightly that the narrator will later feel similarly, repressing his emotions like a mechanical man. In response, Norton calls him insane.
