Who were the first men to ascend Everest and what event did this correspond with?

Sir Edmund Hillary was the first to reach the top on May 29, 1953 from the south side of the mountain (recorded success). It is also believed that George Leigh Mallory may have reached its peak prior to Hillary. Unfortunately, Mallory was lost and never seen again, thus, no one will ever know for sure.
