Fischer had directed guide Anatoli Boukreev to bring up the rear, stay close to the group, and keep an eye on everybody. Anatoli Boukreev had ignored Fischer's instructions. Instead of climbing with the team, he slept late, and departed base camp some five hours behind the last of the clients. When Krause collapsed at 20,000 feet, Boukreev was nowhere near him. Fischer had paid Anatoli Boukreev $25000 to guide the group but he failed to do so. Anatoli Boukreev countered that he was given too much responsibility.
