Into Thin Air

How does Krakauer feel after achieving something he has been fantasizing about for months? Why is this ironic?

Upon reaching the summit, Krakauer isn't excited, happy, or at all elated. He's worried about the descent which will be all the more difficult because of his limited oxygen supply. He doesn't waste any tine with celebrations..... no pictures, no flags, but rather starts back down immediately.
