Krakauer reflects on how difficult it would be to turn around so close to the summit. The hurculean energy and massive amounts of money put out would have all been for not. He fears that climbers will keep climbing despite the risk. When Krakauer reaches the summit, he only feels dread about what is to come during the descent. Things are out of control.
