Why does Roman say that people judge McCandless too harshly, and that he wasn’t as incompetent as he seemed?

Roman Dial notes that he admires McCandless's efforts, but they are not something he would undertake himself. He suggests that many of the Alaskans who are so critical of McCandless are simply seeing themselves in him...... they recognize in McCandless the things they did as young men.
