Throughout the book Krakauer draws similarities with himself and McCandless. Clearly Krakauer finds Chris both fascinating and, at times, uncomfortably similar to himself. Krakauer wanted to see the last place Chris was alive. Perhaps as a narrative to this book and perhaps even his own life.
