Into the Wild

What link can we made between the end of the book (Krakauer going back to the bus) and Chris' goal to ultimate freedom?

Reformulated question

What would we get from the fact that Krakauer went back to the bus linked to ultimate freedom?

Which moral can we make about the end of the book and the search for ultimate freedom?

Thank you in advance

My take is that Chris's ultimate freedom was a horrid mistake. Chris died finally realizing that he needed people in his life. He understood, too late, that the freedom espoused by writers like Thoreau was not necessarily freedom. Chris died for a romantic idea that had little to do with the realities of living alone in the wild.
