Ron Franz was a widower and a eighty year old. He enters the story with a letter to the magazine that published the story about Chris. Krakauer thinks that the relationship between Franz and McCandless was strong and Franz got very attached to Chris. I also think that Krakauer was quite aware that Franz expected far more stability in the relationship that Chris could give.
