What does all this writing tell Krakauer about McCandless's motives for heading off into the wild?

like if its possible to escape from

Chris wanted freedom, and yes, he was able to escape civilization, but he also paid for that escape with his life.

Does it make sense to try....... sure, if you take the time to carefully prepare and have thought everything through. Plans, back up plans, some type of communication, better knowledge of the lay of the land. What Chris did turned out the way it did because he threw all caution to the wind...... that you cannot do.

Textual evidence (Page 163)

Unfortunately, Chris escapes the "poison" of the civilization he flees, to be poisoned by the nature surrounding him.

"TWO YEARS HE WALKS THE EARTH. NO PHONES,NO POOL, NO PETS, NO CIGARETTES. ULTIMATE FREEDOM. AN EXTREMIST. AN AESTHETIC VOYAGER WHOSE HOME IS THE ROAD. ESCAPED FROM ATLANTA. THOU SHALT NOT RETURN, 'CAUSE "THE WEST IS THE BEST." and NOW AFTER TWO RAMBLING YEARS COMES THE FINAL AND GREATEST ADVENTURE. THE CLIMACTIC BATTLE TO KILL THE FALSE BEING WITHIN AND VICTORIOUSLY CONCLUDE THE SPIRITUAL REVOLUTION.... NO LONGER TO BE POISONED BY CIVILIZATION HE FLEES, AND WALKS ALONE UPON THE LAND TO BECOME LOST INTHE WILD. ALEXANDER SUPERTRAMP MAY 1992
