I think we can tell this stylistically by the way Krakauer chooses the diction around Westerberg. Westerberg is "drawn in" to Chris and is supportive of Chris who is pretty much a stranger to him. He "allows" Chris to do many things on his farm and in preparation for his (Chris) next journey.
