Chris loved the writings of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Both writers preached self-reliance and separating oneself from the status quo of a materialist society.

Chris also liked Jack London's "naturalist" literature. The idea of nature becomming the central theme in life certainly appealed to Chris.
