How does Krakauer use Gene Rosellini “The Mayor of Hippie Cove,” John Waterman, or Carl McCunn in comparison to Chris McCandless? What specific attitudes, characteristics and behaviors does Chris have in common with these characters

All of these characters were counter-culture adventurers. Much like Chris, they all have similar fates. John Waterman, is often compared to McCandless. He was a very talented young climber with a troubled relationship with his father, a tragic personal life, and a very eccentric personality. He became more and more unhinged, and eventually embarked on a borderline suicidal climb of Denali, during which he disappeared, and is presumed dead. Gene Rosellini is a brilliant man from a wealthy family who decides to see if he can live as primitive man did, and succeeds at it for over a decade before deciding his experiment has failed, and killing himself. Carl McCunn is a thirty-five year old amateur photographer who hires a pilot to drop him in the wilderness for a five month long stay to take photographs of wildlife. He forgets to arrange for someone to pick him up, and so ends up killing himself once his rations run out.
